A New Era for the Red Sox Roster

The Red Sox have had a litany of injuries this season, causing them to reach the end of their 40-man roster and need to add pieces just to field a team. Breslow first struck by acquiring Garrett Cooper from the Chicago Cubs as a stopgap until Triston Casas returns to the Red Sox roster. Now, Bailey Horn is brought into the fold and optioned to Triple-A Worcester to add to their left-handed depth.

One thing Breslow has done well this season is adding depth when holes come up. He hasn’t waited around to make moves, even if they are small ones like the Bailey Horn trade. This is indicative of a new mindset for the Red Sox, who have lacked conviction in past seasons under Bloom.

What Bailey Horn Brings

Bailey Horn was in DFA limbo when the Red Sox acquired him. He hasn’t pitched well at all this season, but with a revamped pitching department, plenty of Red Sox arms have seen better performances. Between this and a connection to Craig Breslow, it’s a match that makes plenty of sense.

Horn was originally drafted by the White Sox, sent to the Cubs, and then returned to the White Sox. This season, he’s made nine appearances with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights and pitched to an 11.32 ERA. On the bright side, 10 runs were charged in two games. Horn has also walked 10 batters with 15 strikeouts so far.

Time will tell if Breslow and his staff will shape the Red Sox roster with conviction. The biggest test will be what happens at the trade deadline. For now, it’s a refreshing sight for the Red Sox to add depth when it’s available via trade or minor league signings.
