Rutgers QB enters transfer portal in surprising move
Quarterback Gavin Wimsatt. Marc Lebryk-USA TODAY Sports

Rutgers’ starting quarterback from last season is set to enter the transfer portal in what amounts to a surprising move.

Gavin Wimsatt, who started all 13 games for the Scarlet Knights last season, has reportedly entered the transfer portal.

Wimsatt only passed for 1,735 yards, nine touchdowns and eight interceptions last season, though he added 497 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground.

He led Rutgers to a 7-6 season, including a win over Miami in the Pinstripe Bowl. That marked the Scarlet Knights’ best season since 2014.

Why is Wimsatt leaving? He lost the starting job to Athan Kaliakmanis, who had a strong spring.

Kaliakmanis transferred from Minnesota, where he had 1,838 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions last season. He was the Golden Gophers quarterback and helped them to a 6-7 season.

Kaliakmanis has traded one Big Ten school for another and is set to be the starter. Now, Wimsatt needs to find a new landing spot.
